Mompreneur: Tara Brooke and Power of Birth
February 7, 2011Posted by pamela |
Marin mom and childbirth educator Tara Brooke took her lifelong interest in pregnancy and motherhood and developed Power of Birth, a studio offering childbirth education classes, doula services, new parent support, and more. We asked Tara to tell us about herself, her business, and her passion for helping new moms and moms-to-be.
Please tell us a little about yourself. What's your background?
I was born and raised in Princeton, New Jersey. I spent most of my adult life in New York City. I began practicing as a labor and postpartum doula in New York over a decade ago. I opened a studio called Power of Birth that housed doula services and childbirth education classes. A lifestyle change brought us to Marin and now I practice as a childbirth educator and postpartum doula coaching parents during the 0–3 months age.
How did you get started working with pregnant women and new moms?
I have always had an intense curiosity about pregnancy and the transformative process that happens when women give birth. I listened when women would tell stories about their own births, their mothers births and marveled at how different they could be. I felt that the imprint of these experiences were fascinating. I found that there was often a gap in the education and support that families had during this time of such major transition. Power of Birth fills that gap through our childbirth education classes, doula support and breastfeeding circles.
What's the most fulfilling thing about your work?
I have always been drawn to pregnant women and babies. Even as a child I remember thinking pregnancy was a magical time and I still think it is. I am so thrilled to work with families during such an important and sacred time in their lives. When a family feels supported and ready for labor or a new family establishes a rythm I am satisfied with my work. All newborns are not the same! Getting to know so many little souls and helping new moms and dads learn about their newborn never gets boring.
What do you like best about living and working in Marin?
Marin feels like a very special place to raise a family. We moved here from NYC seeking a different lifestyle. For my own family, as well as the clients I work with, Marin fosters a warm and welcoming environment.
What do you and your family do for fun in the Bay Area?
We love exploring the California Academy of Sciences, the Bay Area Discovery Museum, the farmers' markets, gardening, and cooking together.
