With this year's abundance of snow, Tahoe has become the ultimate family getaway destination this winter! Get ready for Ski Week and Spring Break and plan your ultimate Tahoe vacation with the help from our guide to family fun in the Sierra.
Whether you're skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or just looking to play around in the snow, there's something for you and your family in the mountains this winter.
Tahoe is a hot spot for skiing and snowboarding. Here's our guide to ski resorts in the Tahoe and Truckee areas. Most of these resorts have everything you need: ski runs and lifts, lessons, a variety of lodging options from hotel rooms to spacious private homes, restaurants, family activities, and entertainment, making them all-in-one destinations for families.
Not into the ski and snowboard scene, but still want some fun in the snow? You'll find a wide variety of snow play option in the Sierra. From simple roadside Sno Parks to snow play resorts with all the amenties, there's something for everyone. At State-of-California-run Sno Parks you'll need to bring your own equipment, but many of these resorts have all the equipment you need—from tubes to sleds—for a day of snow-play fun. Here's our guide to snow play destinations in the mountains.
Cross country is downhill skiing's more relaxed sibling, and it's easy for everyone to get started and hit the trails. My kids and I tried it at Tahoe Donner for the first time last year and absolutely loved it! Here's our guide to place to cross country ski in the Tahoe area.
Looking for more active family fun in the snow? Snowshoeing is easy to do and fun, and with the growing sport of fat biking you can ride specially designed mountain bikes over snowy trails. Both are a blast, and we tried them at Tahoe Donner's amazing Alder Creek Adventure Center, located just outside of the town of Truckee.
Places to Stay
Needless to say, there's no shortage of lodging options in the Tahoe area, from luxury hotels to lakeside condos. Some of the places we've tried and recommend for families include Granlibakken outside Tahoe City and Donner Lake Lodge and the Hampton Inn and Suites in Truckee. We also love the many lodging options and amenities at Northstar California Resort—being able to walk to dinner and having the gondola right outside your front door is fantastic! For even more options, check out the offerings from Tahoe Luxury Properties, where you can rent anything from cozy cabins to spectacular lakeside villas.
