Saving the Earth, One Outfit at a Time with Marin Kids and Maternity Consignment

Marin Kids and Maternity Consigment storefront in San RafaelIn this special "Earth Week" guest post, Melissa Hereford, Marin mompreneur and owner of Marin Kids and Maternity Consignment in San Rafael, offers a few reasons why buying gently used items (and selling or donating yours) is good not only for the wallet but for the environment, too.

Her motto is "Saving the earth, one outfit at a time," and she takes the idea seriously!

As we approach another Earth Day, we find ourselves focusing more and more on the recycling movement with our children, the future of the planet, and the limited space in our landfills in mind! Buying gently worn and gently used items is not only about saving money. That is a wonderful aspect of the practice, but it seems to be ever more important to reduce all the waste inherent in both manufacturing and retail. For example, when you buy gently used items, you:

  • Reduce the amount of packaging (often every single item of clothing arrives at your local shop neatly packaged in it's own plastic bag!)
  • Pollutants found in flame retardant clothing are often washed out (flame retardent chemicals are controversial and may/may not actually protect your child)
  • Work toward breaking the must buy new consumerism mind-set. (If you question this, spend a day or two working with us to see the amount of plastic in 3 "exersaucers" that are beyond use and cannot be recycled!)
  • Show children how we live what we preach beyond our own green bins on the curb; that we have opportunities to recycle and reuse in our everyday lives.

Recycled clothing at Marin Kids ConsignmentConsignment is an inexact science and is as fun as a  treasure hunt! You never know what you will find when you come in to our shop. It seems as if your items to sell will often wait for the perfect buyer, and it feels great to have your things loved again.

We also donate to a few wonderful local charities, including Image for Success, Marin Abused Women Services, Pregnancy Resource of Marin, and Loved Twice. Our customers may decide to donate directly or consign items, and we are happy to help with either process. When you hear the words of thanks from moms have nothing, you know that you are making a difference in a real way. And that difference comes from each and every one of our consignors!
