Public summer camps on the decline?
July 13, 2008
Posted by pamela |Apparently more and more parents in Marin are sending their children to pricey private summer day camps like Camp Galileo and Steve and Kate's Camp. We’re always on the lookout for special summer camps offering unique experiences for children who attend. Namaste Learning Center (NLC) offers a summer camp in Fairfax’s Peri Park that offers a wide variety of programs, including yoga, crafts, games, cooking, and nature and environmental education. We asked founders Arriel Adler and Holly Salamun a few questions about NLC’s summer camp sessions.
Can you tell us a little about yourselves?
We have both been educators in Marin County for over ten years. We share an authentic position on how quality education can impact and enhance a child's life.
What makes this different then other summer camps?

Mediterranean Cooking Camp for Kids
April 2, 2008

Pine Point Cooking School offers cooking classes for kids ages 9–17 in Mediterranean Cuisine—Italian, French and Greek—with an emphasis on local organic produce, seafood and poultry. “Your dish will never be better than its worst quality ingredient,” and “Never eat anything your grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food” are two of the favorite maxims of Adrianna, the Italian-Greek instructor. She mixes cooking sessions with blind tastings (“Guess which is the farmer’s market peach?”), field trips (to the Marin Farmer’s Market, to local farms, and artisanal food producers) with instruction in kitchen safety, equipment, table setting, meal planning and organizational tips.

I have been looking for a local art class for my son Trevor for some time now. I wanted a summer class/camp that offered a few different types of art activities, such as drawing, ceramics, and painting. He really enjoys all types of art activities, so I thought it would be a good activity to expand his creative development. After a search, I finally found a few unique programs and summer camps.

There are so many different day camps being offered in Marin. Every year, there seems to be more of a variety of camps for kids of all ages. Listed below are a few popular and interesting camps:
Angel Island Camp is a 25-year-old tradition on historic Angel Island State Park in San Francisco Bay. Run by the Belvedere-Tiburon Recreation Department, sessions include Medieval Times, Survivor Challenge, Wildlife Wonders, Wild West, Mad Scientists, and more. An introduction to kayaking is provided on the last day of each session. One-week sessions are from 9:15 am to 4:15 pm, and begin June 16 and run through August 15, 2008. Cost is $315 per week (week three is $252 due to the July 4 holiday). More information: http://www.btrecreation.org/camps_27.htm
